Smoking is known to constitute a primary cause of both: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. It is common for individuals suffering from COPD to develop lung cancer. On the other hand a half of patients diagnosed with lung cancer, fulfill criteria of COPD. Both diseases may occur in non-smoking individuals. In these patients lung cancer major risk factor is pulmonary obstruction. The lung cancer prevalence correlates with pulmonary obstruction. Therefore the assessement of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) may be helpful In identifying patients with increased lung cancer risk. In the paper interrelations between these diseases as well as the pathological mechanisms and pathways has been discussed.
