Cognitive function impairment is common problem in multiple sclerosis and remission is rare observed. It may occur with any stage of disease, even prior to physical disability and clinically isolated syndrome and poorly correlates with clinical severity of multiple sclerosis. They are more vulnerable in chronic progressive disease, especially in primary progressive, than in the relapsing-remitting form, although this has not been a constant finding.
The cognitive impairment observed in multiple sclerosis is: episodic memory, sustained attention, verbal fluency, processing speed, executive function. The diagnosis is based on neuropsychological examination which is time-consuming. Therefore is not widely spread.
