Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin disease in which pathogenesis genetic and immunological disturbances are involved. Commonly, AD treatment includes: emollients, topical anti-inflammatory medications and, in severe cases, photo(chemo)therapy or systemic immunosuppressants. Recent literature data indicate the efficacy of maintenance treatment of AD with local tacrolimus applied 2-3 times weekly for several months. In the article current knowledge on this new therapeutic option is described. Moreover, controversies concerning safety of topical calcineurin inhibitors are discussed.
