Despite extensive research the pathogenesis of essential hypertension still remains unknown. Regulation of blood pressure includes a complex series of interacting factors which control diameter of blood vessels, their responsiveness, fluid volume and cardiac output. We made an attempt to summarize contemporary views on the role of genes and the environment, describing major mechanisms leading to hypertension.
