Diagnosis and treatment of larynx cancer

The symptoms of the larynx cancer, according to anatomoclinical division for supraglottis, glottis and hypoglottis were presented. The diagnostic methods: microlaryngoscopy, radiology, videostroboscopy, fiberoscopy and other were shown. In the recent years the number of larynx cancer surgical procedures undertaken in ENT Department in Poznań has been stabilized. 130-150 patient with larynx cancer per year undergone the surgery. The total laryngectomy is still the predominating type of surgery (63%). In 35% the organ preservation procedures may be applied. The simultaneous neck dissection is performed in all cases with diagnosed neck nodes. The radical modified and selective types of neck dissections are performed. The neck metastases were confirmed in about 38% of larynx cancer patients. The adjuvant radiotherapy is the therapeutic standard in all cases of stage T3 and T4 and neck metastases. Choosing the treatment option the patients quality of life should be taken under consideration.
