Introduction. lupus erythematosus profundus (LEP) is a rare variant of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Although the exact etiology is still unclear, its onset is considered to be induced by different factors, mainly by physical traumas. Clinically, the disease is characterized by well-defined subcutaneous nodules and plaques localized on the face, upper trunk and upper limbs with subsequent development of deep atrophies.
Objective. Presentation of a patient with LEP with reference to current diagnostic and therapeutic options.
Case report. A 48-year-old woman with a longstanding history of well-defined, infiltrated erythematous skin lesions located symmetrically on cheeks and upper arms, with subsequent development of atrophic scars. The diagnosis of LEP was established on the basis of clinical and histopathological examinations.
Conclusions. lupus erythematosus profundus may constitute a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Due to recurrent and chronic course of the disease and formation of atrophic scarring, LEP may cause serious psychological problems.
