Hypertension management includes both non pharmacological and pharmacological treatment. There are 7 main groups of hypertension drugs: diuretics, β-adrenergic antagonists, α-adrenergic antagonist, a- and β-adrenergic antagonists, calcium channel antagonists, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers. According to European Society of Hypertension, European Society of Cardiology and Polish Society of Cardiology and Polish Society of Hypertension the potential of all these groups of drugs to lower blood pressure is comparable. The factors which can influence the choice of the certain group of drugs include coexisting diseases, drug tolerance and drug interactions.
