Polish population is regarded as getting older. Gastrointestinal tumours especially colorectal cancers are age related and the
morbidity rate increases significantly in older people. Still, for many of them stoma is the final solution that appears
after surgical treatment. In this study we analyzed side complications of colostomy matched by advanced age of patients. Medical data of 654 colostomy patients
was reviewed. Patients were afterwards divided into three groups defined according to age at the time of colostomy: group I under 65 yrs, group II between 65 and 74 yrs and group III over 75 yrs. One third of patients (202 out of 654) was well on in years at
the time colostomy was created. Chi square Pearson’s test was used for statistical purposes. Total side
complication rate was 34.9%. Early postoperative complications were present in 7% of patients. Late complication rate
was statistically higher.
