Lyme disease is a zoonosis caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted to humans through infected ticks of the Ixodes species. The latter live in humid forested areas, especially in places overgrown with alders, elders and ferns. Ticks feed on over 300 species of mammals, birds and reptiles. The risk of transmission of infection is related to the geographic area, the stage of the tick’s life cycle and the duration of feeding. Clinical manifestations of Lyme disease are divided into early and late stages. The most typical symptom is erythema migrans, which occurs at the site of the bite. Infection can disseminate to multiple skin sites, joints and the nervous system. An effective means of treatment is through antimicrobial therapy.
