Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is nowadays one of the most common diseases. Its natural history consists of recurrent exacerbations which are potentially life threatening. During COPD exacerbation respiratory insufficiency is a common finding. Until today patients with respiratory insufficiency caused by COPD have been subject to mechanical ventilation. COPD patients are subject to potentially life threatening complications caused by common respirator dependency. Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) seems to be an efficient alternative for patients with complete respiratory insufficiency caused by COPD exacerbation. The article describes potential advantages and ways of NIPPV treatment in patients with COPD exacerbation
