Pain is a basic problem of patients with rheumatic diseases and the main reason for their visits to rheumatologists or general practitioners. Doctors prescribe multiple analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and even glicorticoids. Chronic therapy with these agents often causes side effects, so to avoid them doctors are looking for non-pharmacological antianalgesic methods. As such methods physiotherapy procedures like cryotherapy, massage, electrotherapy, ultrasound, magnetic fields and acupuncture are considered. Although these methods are often effective, they should only be a part of complex therapy of rheumatic diseases and never a pharmacotherapy substitute, especially in the case of inflammatory rheumatic diseases.
