Introduction

The nutrition of children and adolescents significantly affects the physical and mental development of those suffering from type 1 diabetes and their healthy peers. Nutrition rules for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes do not differ from the principles of feeding their healthy peers. Hence, the demand for individual nutrients in type 1 diabetes and healthy people is the same. The nutrition of children and adolescents should meet the recommendations of the Institute of Food and Nutrition and the Polish Diabetes Association.

Aim of the study

Aim of the study is to present a pattern of nutrition for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, treated with intensive insulin therapy using the Mediterranean diet, which was recognised by the World Health Organization as a model of a healthy diet for both children and adults. Through the participation of a large number of natural products, it has antioxidant, chemopreventive, and anti-inflammatory effects, it reduces the level of triglycerides and cholesterol, as well as postprandial glycaemia.
