Introduction: As hemodialysis treatment changes many aspects of patients’ life we have decided to estimate how their mood is affected by the treatment.
Material and methods: For 3 years we have estimated QOL of 418 HD patients from 6 dialysis centers. Control group was established from 63 patients’ spouses. Both groups we filled in the form concerning among others QOL, depression, anxiety and personality profile.
Results and conclusions: High percentage of HD patients were depressed or revealed anxiety. Ther were correlated with social support and personality type. Those who in stressed situation were escaping into emotions or were psychologically withdrawing had higher depression and anxiety. Quality of life and depression, but not anxiety, were important predictors of patients’ death.
