Resistant hypertension is relatively rare, but difficulties in achieving target blood pressure are frequently encountered. The primary care physician should recognize “pseudo-resistance” due to errors in blood pressure measurement, “white coat” reaction or low patient compliance with the therapeutic regimen. Advice presented in this review should allow more rational referral of patients with uncontrolled blood pressure to hypertension specialists.
