Glycemic disorders are connected with higher risk of cardiovascular incidents. The risk of coronary artery disease is four times higher at patients with type 2 diabetes than without it. Blood glucose level is an independent risk factor of death in acute coronary syndromes of patients with or without a diagnosis of diabetes. Due to recently published trials and meta-analysises it seems that postprandial blood glucose is more connected with a risk of cardiovascular disease then fasting plasma glucose. Serum glucose level higher then 6,1 mmol/l (110 mg/dl) is associated with higher hospital mortality, myocardial infarction or heart failure. The guidelines of Polish Diabetic Association recommend to maintain a blood glucose concentration below 180 mg/dl in patients with acute coronary syndromes and to routine measure blood glucose level in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Lowering blood glucose concentration same as reducing cholesterol concentration and blood pressure control have significant health importance and diabetes screening is strongly recommended.
