Metabolic syndrome consists of some metabolic abnormalities including visceral obesity, decreased HDL cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, elevated blood pressure and hyperglycaemia and is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common causes of infertility affecting 5-10% women in reproductive age. The major clinical manifestations are chronic anovulation, menstrual abnormalities and hyperandrogenism. Patients with polycystic ovary syndrome have also higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovary syndrome share common pathogenetic factor that is insulin resistance. The early identification of the components of metabolic syndrome in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome leads to prevention of cardio-vascular diseases.
