Foreign bodies in salivary glands are extremely uncommon. The foreign body usually enters salivary glands via the pathway of Stenton’s or Wharton’s ducts, while penetrating through the skin is less commonly observed. There is a description of a case of a 19-year-old boy with numerous glass splinters in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland, admitted to The Clinic because of a refractory salivary fistula which occurred after facial trauma. Detailed knowledge of the trauma circumstances, thorough physical examination and visualization of the foreign body in an x-ray image of the mandible resulted in successful surgical intervention. Inflammatory complications in the form of a salivary fistula emerging during wound healing after facial trauma should raise suspicion of presence of a foreign body in a salivary gland.
