Serum Chemerin Level as a Potential Biomarker of Early Cardiac Involvement in Patients with Psoriasis: a Case-Control Study

Introduction
Chemerin is an adipokine involved in inflammation and metabolic regulation and has been linked to psoriasis. However, its potential association with cardiovascular involvement in patients with psoriasis remains insufficiently explored.
Objective
This study aimed to assess the association between serum chemerin levels and subclinical cardiovascular changes in patients with psoriasis and to evaluate the potential role of chemerin as an early marker of cardiovascular involvement in this population.
Material and methods
This case-control study included 73 psoriatic patients and 73 healthy controls. Serum chemerin levels, echocardiographic parameters, and a complete lipid profile were assessed in all participants. Body mass index was also calculated.
Results
Serum chemerin, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and total cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the psoriasis group than in the control group. Regarding echocardiographic data, the left ventricle global longitudinal strain was statistically significantly lower in psoriasis group, indicating subclinical left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that serum chemerin was an independent predictor of global longitudinal strain in patients with psoriasis.
Conclusions
Serum chemerin may be a useful marker for identifying patients with psoriasis who are at increased risk of early cardiac involvement.
