Syncope is a symptom, defined as a transient, self-limited loss of consciousness usually leading to falling. The mechanism is a transient global cerebral hypoperfusion. There are the following possible pathophysiological causes of syncope: neurally mediated, orthostatic hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias as primary cause, structural cardiac disease and cerebrovascular. The diagnosis of syncope is usually made by GPs. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the fact that syncope could be a symptom of neurological disorders or a side effect of their pharmacological treatment.
