Hard to heal wounds, which include both chronic wounds and surgical, are a significant clinical problem and are a challenge for physicians. The hindered healing process is often related to the presence of pathogenic microorganisms within the wound, remarkably multi-drug resistant strains, or those capable of forming a biofilm. They not only lead to the development of infection but also prolong the healing process. Therefore, the use of topical dressings and antimicrobial preparations is a crucial element of the therapeutic process. This review aims to systematize the knowledge and assess the biocidal effectiveness of the available products containing antimicrobial substances, which are used to treat wounds that are hard to heal, with particular emphasis on at risk of becoming infected or infected wounds.
