Melanocytic naevi, also called benign melanocytic tumors are very common. The majority of them are benign and never undergo neoplastic transformation. Nevertheless about 30% of all melanoma lesions develop from a melanocytic nevus. Many patients experiencing cosmetic problems associated with presence of melanocytic lesions require radical treatment instead of just a plain camouflage. A reliable determination of the type of melanocytic naevus is crucial for the choice of a proper method of its removal. This paper summarizes information concerning different types of melanocytic naevi, from their clinical appearance to variety of strategies of radical treatment.
