The importance of medical records kept by family doctors in detecting cases of domestic violence

Domestic violence is quite common in society, so it is also common among family doctors” patients. Only a small proportion of cases are reported and registered, but family doctors, because of their unique position in the health system – allowing them to keep in direct contact with patients for many years, often at their living places, and making it possible for them to coordinate and control the outcomes of other medical professionals” activities – when they keep their medical files correctly, it is possible for them to notice the effects of violent acts coming in series. Each single violent act’s effect often cannot be clearly interpreted, but when discussed all together, they can be classified as a case of domestic violence.
