Introduction

Post-separation violence is an important public health issue due to its severe physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences for victims and healthcare systems. The study aimed to examine the nature, dynamics, consequences, and support needs associated with post-separation violence based on the experiences of women who had experienced this form of abuse.

Material and methods

A qualitative study was conducted as part of the international project Untangled from Violence – Safe Again. Data were collected using an online focus group interview (FGI) involving adult women who had experienced physical, psychological, sexual, or economic violence after relationship separation. Participants were recruited through support institutions for victims of domestic violence. The discussion lasted approximately 2.5 hours, was audio-visually recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic qualitative analysis.

Results

The findings indicate that post-separation violence is a complex and escalating phenomenon with serious health and socio-economic consequences. Participants reported multiple forms of abuse, including physical, psychological, sexual, economic, and material violence, often occurring simultaneously. Long-term exposure resulted in physical injuries, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic stress, insomnia, and financial and legal difficulties. Women emphasized insufficient institutional support and highlighted the need for integrated medical, psychological, legal, and social assistance. The study also identified common risk factors, mechanisms of abuse, and victims’ expectations regarding public health interventions.

Conclusions

Post-separation violence should be recognized as a major public health challenge requiring coordinated, interdisciplinary responses. The findings support the development of prevention, intervention, and support programs based on the Cure Violence Health Model, as well as improvements in healthcare professionals’ competencies to identify and respond effectively to violence. Strengthening public health policies and integrated support systems is essential to reduce the health burden associated with post-separation violence.
