The role of psychological factors in the pathogenesis of functional gastrointestinal disorders

Functional gastrointestinal disorders are rapidly increasing incidence in the developed countries and represent a significant therapeutic problem. The role of psychological factors in their pathogenesis is often stressed but remains unclear and is rarely considered in clinical practice. This article discusses the main psychological factors participating in the pathogenesis and clinical course of the most frequent functional gastrointestinal diseases, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and irritable colon syndrome.
