The causes of seizures and epilepsy are not the same. Many factors can provoke seizures without causing epilepsy. It is important to differentiate isolated seizures, which can be a result of any factor which can impair brain function. These can be the outcome of acute metabolic disorders, or neurological diseases such as stroke or head trauma. These seizures are named acute symptomatic seizures and their incidence increases with age. The aim of this article is to describe of acute seizures occurring in patients with stroke, head trauma and after withdrawal of alcohol. Benzodiazepines (diazepam or lorazepam if available) should be chosen as drugs of choice in the treatment and prevention of status epilepticus of seizures after alcohol withdrawal. The efficacy of the others drugs is not sufficiently documented.
