Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional disease in gastroenterology. The symptoms are very heterogeneous and variable. IBS is still the social and economical problem. Until now there is no etiological and diagnostic markers of the disease. The diagnosis should be based on positive diagnostic criteria (Rome II) and exclude alarm symptoms. There is no universal therapy. The aim of recent studies is to understand the pathophysiologial processes and to make the successful prophylactics and therapy possible in the future
