For a few years, it has been known that rhinitis plays an important role in the outcome of asthma. Numerous epidemiological data confirm that fact. The upper and lower respiratory tract have a similar structure – this is a fact supporting the above hypothesis. The treatment of atopic rhinitis is successful in asthma because these two diseases frequently coexist. The author presents fresh data and current opinions on the importance of atopic rhinitis and bronchial hypersensitivity.
