Loss of a parent or other important person is one of the most difficult life experiences for a child, affecting all spheres of his/her life during childhood and coping with adult life. Based on the review of the literature and bereavement service experience, the article presents how the loss of a parent or another important person affect child’s functioning, age-appropriate understanding of this process, factors affecting the difficulty or inability to experience the process of bereavement and the potential consequences of bereavement in childhood. Palliative care provides care for patients with life-limiting diseases and their relatives, and children in particular. The care of a bereaved child is one of the most difficult tasks for hospice teams.
