Bridging tradition and innovation: dental students’ perspectives on artificial intelligence in Kosovo

Introduction

We are living in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), and it is not just about convenience, it is about innovation. Even fields, such as dentistry, are being transformed by AI. From analyzing dental images and detecting issues that might be missed by the human eye to designing perfectly fitted braces or crowns, AI is changing the way dental care is provided.

Objectives

The aim of this study was to evaluate dental students’ knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions on the incorporation of AI into dental practice. By focusing on gender differences, types of institution, and year of study, we sought to gain a deeper understanding of how students perceive AI’s role in enhancing dental education and patient care.

Material and methods

A questionnaire consisting of 19 questions was distributed via Google Forms to dental students from private and public institutions to evaluate their knowledge, perception, and attitude toward AI and possible applications in dentistry.

Results

Out of 290 participants, 53% were females. In the sample, majority of participants (99%) were familiar with AI, with 88% having a basic understanding of its functionality. However, only 20% felt confident using a dental AI program, while 10% thought AI’s diagnostic capabilities might surpass those of specialist doctors. Moreover, more than 80% of students disagreed that AI could replace dentists and doctors. Female participants were more likely to agree compared to males (p < 0.05). In addition public institutions’ students consistently demonstrated higher agreement with AI’s diagnostic capabilities (p < 0.05). Differences were most pronounced in later years, with senior students showing greater trust in and agreement with AI’s diagnostic and prognostic capabilities (p < 0.05).

Conclusions

This study found that students reported having heard about AI in dentistry, indicating widespread awareness.
