Congenital toxoplasmosis – diagnosis and treatment

Toxoplasma gondii is a intracellular protozoan parasite. Infection is meanly acquired by ingestion of food or water that contaminated with oocyst or by eating undercooked or raw meet containing tissue cyst. Infection acquired during pregnancy my course severe damage to the fetus. Only 10-15% of congenitally infected infants have clinical symptoms at birth, but more than 80% my later develop sequelae, which most often affects eyes. Diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis can be established by direct detection of parasite or by serological techniques. PCR has revolutionised prenatal diagnosis. Early diagnosis and treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis prevent late sequelae of the disease.
