Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways (respiratory system). It is found worldwide, in all age groups. Correct diagnosis based on patient history and physical examination, supported by pulmonary function tests (spirometry) including bronchodilator test is the key to proper pharmacological treatment. Correct management allows clinical symptoms to be stabilized and controlled. Drugs used in the treatment therapy are divided into immediate (in acute attacks), and day-to-day therapy, where corticosteroids and beta-2-agents (mimetics) play a very important role. The most important in managing asthma is regular use of anti-inflammatory drugs, particularly inhaled corticosteroids. Long-acting beta-2 agents are indicated in difficult to control asthma symptoms. They decrease the number of exacerbations as well as allowing the use of corticosteroids to be reduced, which is very important because of their potential for adverse affects.
