Quality of care in a neurosurgical ward from nurses and neurosurgeons point of view

Introduction. Nowadays patient is an active recipient of care services. Nurses should provide care at the good level. How looks like provided care
from nurses’ point of view? There is still very limited studies have focused on the quality of care from nurses’ perception in the neurosurgical ward.
Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to identify nurses and doctors perception of the quality of care delivered to patients in the
neurosurgical ward.

Material and methods. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 130 nurses and 50 neurosurgeons in a Neurosurgery Wards of hospitals
in Mazovian Voivodship in 2008.

Results. Nurses and doctors perception about quality of care was examined in the areas of quality of care knowledge, nursing care provided
for patient, organizational support (in general). More than half of the respondents (60.9%) have knowledge about quality of care good
enough, but they didn’t gave at real/good level explanations about quality of care; 89% of nurses and 91% of doctors thought that nursing
care and care provided by neurosurgeons for patients was at the good level. About half of nurses (48%) reported about high burnout level.
Less than one third of nurses (28%) reported that they systematically were benefit from information and extra education (literature review,
conferences).
Conclusions. Nurses were not satisfied with the organizational support they received in the neurosurgical ward and in the hospital in
general. Nurses express their need for more information and education, especially those related to their current working place. Neurosurgeons
have good knowledge about quality of care.
