Palliative care aims to achieve the best possible quality of life of terminally ill patients and their families. Accurate diagnosis and treatment of pain are necessary to meet such assumptions. Careful choice of appropriate drug and route of administration is needed to increase the chance of effective treatment. However, there are many complex issues and unresolved problems. Neuropathic and/or breakthrough pain, correct administration of oral medicines in patients with swallowing problems, intolerable side effects remains a challenge.
Because the oral route is the most convenient it is the one most often used. In cancer pain, oxycodone has become one of the most popular opioids. It should be considered an attractive choice because it offers the advantage of good effect in nociceptive and neuropathic pain with alternative route of administration as oral liquids.
