The pace of new cases of chronic kidney disease has risen alarmingly. It seems to increase in parallel to the epidemic of obesity and diabetes in recent decades. The metabolic syndrome as a risk factor of cardiovascular diseases has been proved in many studies. However its impact on renal diseases is still underevaluated. The data coming from recently published papers provide evidence on the interaction between obesity and kidney damage. This paper discusses mechanisms contributing to renal disease in obesity, histological changes characteristic for this condition and therapeutic prospects.
