The objective of this review paper was to discuss the application of propolis in pediatric dentistry. Propolis, a natural bee product, is gaining popularity in pediatric dentistry due to its safety and therapeutic benefits. Rich in bioactive compounds, it offers a promising alternative to synthetic drugs for oral healthcare, reducing the risk of adverse reactions in children. This review explored the various applications of propolis in pediatric dentistry.
For data extraction, five electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Scholar, and Web of Science were systematically searched using key words, such as propolis, pediatric dentistry, and bee wax extract. These specific search terms were employed to identify relevant papers, and only full-text articles written in English language were included.
Included studies focused on various applications of propolis in pediatric dentistry, such as tooth storage medium, mouthwash, intracanal medicaments and irrigants, caries prevention, pulp therapy, and other applications, including the management of dentinal hypersensitivity and wound healing.
Propolis shows promise as a safe and effective alternative for children’s oral health. It has various beneficial properties and can be easily obtained. While more research is needed, the findings suggest it can improve oral health outcomes and reduce the need for invasive treatments in dentistry. Standardization and long-term research are vital for ensuring propolis effectiveness and safety.
