The use of hyaluronic acid in the treatment of pressure ulcers: single-case study

Confronting perimenopausal women’s knowledge of coronary heart disease with their health behaviours. Controversial role of hormone replacement therapy in the protection of coronary heart disease

Introduction

The aim was to describe the healing process of a pressure ulcer (PU) following a change in local pharmacotherapy to hyaluronic acid (a sterile viscous solution of sodium hyaluronate in a gel form modified with iodine – hyaluronic acid and iodine complex (HA-I) in the primary causal treatment of PUs (pressure relief/redistribution, repositioning, incontinence management, nutrition, and optimisation of comorbidities).

Material and methods

A 76-year-old polymorbid patient with a PU in the sacral area with stagnant PU healing – The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel III met the inclusion criteria. A single embedded design was used to collect empirical data by self-constructed protocol with an extract monitoring the course of wound healing according to the recommendations of standard procedures.

Results

After local treatment of the PU with HA-I, adjunctive therapy, a bio lamp, a diet with increased intake of vitamin C with zinc, sipping enteral nutrition with specific nutrients (arginine, zinc, vitamin C, antioxidants), anaemia treatment, a positioning bed with an anti-decubitus mattress, positioning, and rehabilitation were applied, the wound healing and complementary therapy was successful ending after six months.

Conclusions

We present a single clinical case of successful healing of a PU in a polymorbid immobile patient with the help of HA-I. Implications for practice: include HA-I in the catalogue of medical devices so that they can be reimbursed from the health insurance, standardise the use of objective measurement tools assessing the course of wound healing, assess the quality of life of patients with chronic wounds, and use an electronic program for documenting the course of wound healing.
