Chronic pain is a disease in itself, requires a multimodal treatment including pharmacotherapy, interventional procedures, rehabilitation, psychotherapy and neuromodulation. Opioids are the most effective and most widely used in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe pain. Strong opioids in clinical trials have demonstrated their efficacy in patients with cancer, in patients with nociceptive and neuropathic pain, as well in elderly. The long-term use of opioids is associated with side effects: constipation, physical and mental abuse, tolerance, opioid-induced hyperalgesia, the risk of immune and hormonal disorders. The use of strong opioids in patients with non-malignant pain should be carried out according to the experts recommendations developed in different countries. This paper presents a patient with non-malignant chronic pain in the course of Crohn’s disease, in which the applied formulation of oxycodone with naloxone (Targin) gave good pain control with no side effects from the gastrointestinal tract.
