The seriously ill patient is a patient who usually has severely limited or disabled possibilities of moving. A lot of causes of this status of health influence in a distinct way the therapy, but basic elements of the care remain the same. These include anti-bedsore prophylaxis. Decubitus ulcers as chronic wounds are a result of pressure and ischaemia of tissue.
The role of nurses in anti-bedsore prophylaxis includes keeping of clean, dry and not chapped skin in patients. Additionally, nurses regularly change the position of patients in bed. Physical therapists provide stimulation of the circulatory system by suitable exercises. Also, rehabilitation procedures other than kinesitherapy can be included. Co-operation is necessary between nurses and the physical therapist in the process of anti-bedsore prophylaxis and chronic wound healing.
