INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (1997)

The Central-European Journal of Immunology publishes original papers from the field of clinical and basic immunology, not published before, review articles, abstracts from symposia and conferences, book reviews and letters to the Editor. Redundant or duplicate publications will not be published.
Manuscripts accompanied by CD labeled with the file name and the format of the file – Word 2003 (or preferable by e-mail as an attachment) should be sent in three copies (including copies of figures) to the Editor on the following address:

All articles should be submitted in English. Use double spacing throuhout, including for the title page, abstract, text, acknowledgements, references, individual tables, and legends. Type or print out the manuscript on white bond paper, 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches); or ISO A4, 212 x 297 mm (1 inch).

Manuscript should be arranged as follows:
1) Title,
2) Fornames (full version) and names of the authors (in capitals) and institutional affiliation;
3) Clinic, hospital or laboratory where the work was done, the name of the department(s) and institution(s) to which the work should be attributed;
4) Abstract and below the abstract authors should provide, and identify as such, 3 to 10 key words or short phrases that will assist indexers in cross-indexing the article and may be published with it;
5) Introduction;
6) Material and Methods - identify the methods, apparatus (give the manufacturer’s name and address in parentheses), and procedures in sufficient detail to allow other workers to reproduce the results. Give references to established methods, including statistical methods; identify precisely all drugs and chemicals used, including generic name(s), dose(s) and route(s) of administration;
7) Results should be presented in logical sequence in the text, tables, and illustrations; do not repeat in the text all the data in the tables or illustrations; emphasize or summarize only important observations;
8) Discussion;
9) Acknowledgments, e.g. source(s) of support in the form of grants, equipment, drugs, or all of these;
10) References in citation order;
11) The complete name and address of the author responsible for correspondence about the manuscript. The address should also contain the telephone and/or fax number, and e-mail address.

The bibliography in the text should be quoted in [square parantheses]. Ethical consideration will be taken into account in the assessment of papers which must obey the World Medical Association code of ethics, known as the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983. Do not use patients’ names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material.
References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text and should contain the names and initials of the authors (list all authors if four or less, otherwise list the first three and add et al.), title abbreviation of the journal (according to Index Medicus), year, volume and pages. The chapters of books or monographs should be arranged as follows: name and initials of the author(s), title of the article, title of the book, editors, volume, editorial office, place, year, pages. Authors should use the following examples as guidance:

Articles: Jaffe RC, Herman L (1997): Human immunoglobulin subclasses. Diagn Clin Immunol 16: 110-118,

Book: French MAH: Immunoglobulins in health and disease. MTP Press. Lancaster, UK, 1986.

Chapter in a book: Brown JD: Early events in the infection of the arthropod gut by pathogenic insect viruses. In: Invertebrate Immunity. Ed. K Maramorosch, RE Shope. Academic Press. New York, San Francisco, London. 1976, 80-111.
Avoid citing a ‘personal communication’ unless it provides essential information not available from a public source.

Figures and tables should be prepared as follows:
a) Figures should be drawn in black ink on white paper;
b) Tables in the form of typescript;
c) Figures and tables should be marked on the reverse side with the number and the author’s name;
d) Legends for figures should be typed separately using double spacing, with Arabic numerals corresponding to them;
e) Restrict tables and figures to those needed to explain the argument of the paper and to assess its support. Use graphs as an alternative to tables with many entries; do not duplicate data in graphs and tables.
Letters to the Editor. Both letters concerning and those not concerning articles that have been published in the Journal will be considered for publication. They may contain one table or figure.
Manuscripts must be accompanied by a covering letter signed by all coauthors. This must include the name, address, and telephone number of the corresponding author, who is responsible for communicating with the other authors about revisions and final approval of the proofs.

Conflict of interest.
Authors are expected to describe sources of the research founding, a role of potential sponsor in planning, executing and analysis in the study, and the influence (bias) the funding organization had on the content of the article. Other relationships (such as employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony) providing potential sources of conflict of interest in relation to the submitted article should also be revealed.

Patients’ Rights and Informed Consent.
When reporting experiments on human subjects, authors should indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 2000 (concerning the ethical principles for the medical community and forbidding releasing the name of the patient, initials or the hospital evidence number) and with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional and national). Information regarding the ethical committee approval for conducting the research and the informed consents of patients for participating in the studies should be included in the methods section of those articles, in which the diagnostic intervention or the treatment result from non-routine procedures. The authors presenting case studies are obligated not to disclose patients’ personal data. Regarding photographs, in case of any doubt the picture inadequately protects the patient’s anonymity his consent is required for publication. Articles describing animal studies should contain information of being in accordance with local regulations (institutional and national).

Page Charge: A 50 zloty per page charge (12.50 euro) will be assesed for publication in Central European Journal of Immunology. Instructions for payment will be sent to authors along with the proofs. In extreme cases of inability to pay, the pay charge may be reduced or waived.
The cost of English verification of the text will be 5 euro per page. The cost of reproduction of color illustrations will be 150 euro (depending on the number of colors and their intensity).
