Rheumatology
 
The bi-monthly journal “Reumatologia” publishes original articles, reviews and case reports in the field of rheumatology and on the related subjects as well as reports from national and international meetings and conferences, book reviews, commentaries, personal remembrances and letters to the editor. The journal is published in the paper original version as well as in electronic format on the website: http://www.instytutreumatologii.pl. The journal also publishes editorial articles which are not subject to review; they are published together with the photograph of the author (authors). Postdoctoral (habilitation) theses in the form of a supplement to the journal can also be published – at the author's expense.
• Manuscripts should be submitted in the form of an A4 format single-sided legible computer printout (12 point font, double space, 2.5 cm margins). The text should not be formatted. Every part of the manuscript should start on a new page. The tables and figures should not be inserted within the text, but in a position specified by the author, an appropriate reference should be placed, e.g. Table I, Fig. 3.
• The layout of the text of the original article, review and case report should include the following items in the following order:  
1) the title (in Polish and English);  
2) the first and last names of the authors;  
3) the name of the institution and clinic (department) to which the work should be attributed;  
4) a brief title in Polish which will be used in the journal’s headings and on the cover page;  
5) the first and last name, degree held and full address of the author responsible for correspondence about the manuscript (corresponding author) (including phone and fax number and e-mail address);  
6) max. 3-4 key words in Polish and English compliant with the Index Medicus (Medical Subject Heading);  
7) an abstract in Polish and English (min. 250, max. 300 words for original articles and case reports, with a reference to tables and figures, and from 100 up to 150 words for reviews); the original article abstract should have a structural layout, i.e. it should contain: the objective, material and methods, results, and conclusions;  
8) text of the work in the following order:  
– for original articles – an introduction and objective, material, methods (or material and methods), results, discussion, conclusions;  
– for review articles – free-form layout;  
– for case reports – introduction (why the case is interesting), description of the case, discussion of characteristic symptoms, results of treatment, etc.  
9) acknowledgments and statements;
10) references: works cited in the text should be numbered in the order of the citation; references in the text should be placed in square brackets; last names of the first three authors should be provided, and if there are more authors, an abbreviation “et al.” added, the title of the work, abbreviated name of the journal (as per Index Medicus).
The references should have the following layout:
– articles in a journal: Smith JA, Thompson DJ, Whitcup SM, et al. A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-masked clinical trial of etanercept for the treatment of uveitis associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Arthritis Rheum 2005; 53: 18-23;
– books: Brühl W. Zarys reumatologii. 6th updated edition. PZWL, Warsaw 1987;
– chapters in the books: Lozada CJ, Altman RD. Management of osteoarthritis. In: Arthritis and Allied Conditions. Koopman WJ (ed.). Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Philadelphia 2005; 2257-2276.
The number of references should not exceed 30 for original articles and case reports and 60 for review articles.
• In total, the article, including tables, figures, references and abstracts, cannot exceed: 1) for original articles and reviews – 15 pages, 2) for case reports – 8 pages, 3) personal remembrances – 3 pages (standard manuscript pages containing 1800 characters). A CD-ROM (PC format) containing the manuscript in a text editor file (preferred format: Microsoft Office Word XP, 2000 or previous versions). The printout should correspond exactly to the text file on the electronic medium.
• Each table should be placed on a separate page. Tables should be numbered using Roman numerals in the order in which they appear in the work. The title of the table should be written in Polish and English. Information contained in the tables should not be repeated in the text. Explanations concerning the tables, for instance, explanations of abbreviations, are provided in footnotes underneath the tables.
• Figures and photographs should be numbered using Arabic numerals and attached on separate printouts (in electronic form they should be placed in separate files). Figures should be saved in one of the following formats: .cdr, .tif, .jpg, .ai, .bmp or .eps. Photographs sent to the editorial office in electronic form should have a resolution of 300 dpi and .tif or .jpg format. Please do not insert drawings and photographs in MS Office documents. On the reverse side of the hardcopy of the figure (photograph) please write the last and first name of the first author, as well as the title of the work and the number of the figure. The title (placed at the bottom of the figure or photograph) and the legend should be written in Polish and English. The dimensions of the figure (photograph) together with the designations and the legend should not exceed 16 cm x 12 cm. The figures and photographs are placed in the article in the form in which they are delivered, so please prepare them appropriately. If a figure (photograph) has been published before, then its source should be provided and written consent should be obtained from the copyright holder to publish it again. Colour figures and photographs are also accepted for publishing.
• Abbreviations should always be explained when used for the first time in the text (this rule also applies to abstracts). Abbreviations should be used in the title of the manuscript only exceptionally.
• Results of laboratory tests, as well as appropriate norms and standard fluctuations, should be expressed in units adopted by the International System of Units (Systéme International d’Unités).
• Each manuscript submitted to the editorial office should be accompanied by a declaration signed by all authors transferring all copyrights and publishing rights to the Institute of Rheumatology and stating that the work has not been published before or submitted to be simultaneously published in another journal. • The journal applies the procedures ensuring the originality of manuscripts in accordance with the criteria of ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) and WAME (World Association of Medical Editors), therefore it is also necessary to provide the information on the scope of input of each author to the publication, among others who is the author of the concept of the publication, assumptions, methods, study protocol, and the like as well as on the affiliation of each of the authors. We inform that the editorial office observes the highest standards of scientific publications and the cooperation with authors is based on the transparency of information on the actual input of persons/institutions in the development of the publication. All cases of ghostwriting and guest authorship will be liable for customary penalty as an indication of scientific negligence.
• The submission of a manuscript for publishing is tantamount to a declaration of the authors of:
– absence of conflict of interests on their part, i.e. impartiality in the process of creating the work; simultaneously the editorial office assumes the obligation to assure impartiality in qualifying the work for publication,
– in the case of articles presenting the results of studies, in which patients or volunteers participated:
° of the studies being conducted in compliance with the current requirements of the Declaration of Helsinki (2008 revision),
° of the authors obtaining the approval of the competent research ethics committee to conduct the study and obtaining informed consent of each study participant,
° if adding photographs – of obtaining written consent of the patient to publish his/her image.
• The authors of the works are obliged not to disclose personal details of the patients being described and to include information on the approval of the appropriate research ethics committee in the chapter “Material and methods”. The authors are obliged to present the editorial office with financial disclosure, i.e. the information on the funds allocated for research described in the publication (a research grant, research institution, association, other institution) or their lack.
• Manuscripts submitted to the editorial office assessed by the reviewers. The editorial office chooses a reviewer based on the subject of the submitted manuscript. The rules of review are presented in details on the website of the journal (http://www.instytutreumatologii.pl); the rules are in conformity with the guidelines of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (www.nauka.gov.pl). The editorial office reserves the right to make language corrections without consulting the author. Other changes are consulted with the authors. The editorial office sends manuscripts to the authors for authorization with a request to return them within three days.
• The authors do not receive any fees for works published in the journal “Reumatologia” (except for the works ordered by the editorial office).

The manuscript will be published in the journal provided that all the above requirements are fulfilled. Works not fulfilling the formal requirements will not be reviewed and will be returned to the authors for supplementation purposes.
