Introduction: Midkine, a heparin-binding growth factor, regulates cell growth, cell survival, migration and anti-apoptotic activity in nephrogenesis and development. The pathophysiological roles of midkine range from the occurrence of acute kidney injury to progression of chronic kidney disease, often accompanied by hypertension, renal ischemia and diabetic nephropathy.

Aim: To assess midkine levels in patients on peritoneal dialyses due to end-stage renal failure.

Results: Midkine was significantly higher in peritoneally dialyzed patients when compared to the healthy volunteers. There were no statistically significant differences between diabetic and non-diabetic as well as hypertensive and normotensive dialyzed patients.

Conclusions: Despite promising experimental data on the role of midkine in renal pathology, its role must be proved or disproved in clinical studies, which are lacking up to date.
