Statins and the risk of liver damage

Statins inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis, and successfully prevent coronary heart disease. This paper presents the results of randomized trials and meta-analyses concerning side effects of statins, particularly increased aminotransferases in patients with chronic liver damage. The most frequent side effect of statin therapy is myopathy, and increased activity of aminotransferases in serum is rare (1-3% of patients), usually less than three times the upper limit of normal range. Patients with increased aminotransferases and treated with statins do not have increased risk of progression of liver function. Statin therapy is not associated with a higher risk of severe hepatotoxicity in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and chronic viral hepatitis type C.
