Poles are reluctant to talk about their sexuality, death or serious health problems. However, they are interested in media reports on these topics; they follow Internet forums and read various books about health issues. This observation suggests, that taboos related to oncological diseases, sexuality, mental condition and death anxiety are becoming gradually tamed. Continuous development of patients’ rights and ethical codes concerning treatment of oncological patients motivates psychologists to investigate this unwritten communication code limited by taboo. As a consequence, taboo boundaries may be affected. Exceeding this taboo is a great challenge for all, who undertake difficult conversations with patients having history of oncological diseases. The aim of taming the taboo is easing patients’ tension and anxiety so that the exchange of thoughts brought consolation in the disease. Undertaking taboos in a dignified manner with respect to the patient, minimizes psychological and social sanctions oncological disease. The aim of this article is to understand, not to validate, the meaning of taboo in communication with oncological patient. Author characterizes potential and limitations of overcoming unpleasant feelings will be pointed out. Proposed approach aims to increase the patient’s sense of security. It is a manifestation of respect for the oncological patient’s existential problems. Talks dictated by taboo bring closer worlds of patients and healthy people.
