The aim of the work is to present certain important requirements for postoperative nursing care in patients with diagnosed cerebral vessels aneurysm treated surgically. Material and method: The research has been carried out on 44 patients diagnosed with cerebral vessels aneurysm and qualified for surgical treatment in the year 2007. All the surgical procedures were performed in the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurotraumatology, Dr. J. Biziel’s Memorial Hospital in Bydgoszcz. The examination method chosen was diagnostic poll using Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and Patients’ Categorization Sheet. The evaluation was conducted on the first day after the surgery and on the day of hospital discharge. The occurrence of symptoms of vasospasm was then analyzed. The results: The majority of the examined patients were older than 41 (62.6%). 77.6% of the patients treated surgically in the classical way and 10% of the patients treated by embolisation suffered from respiratory failure. The respiratory efficiency remained in a statistically significant relation to the treatment method used (p<0.05; r=0.52733). Conclusions: 1. The requirement for postoperative nursing care in patients treated surgically for cerebral vessels aneurysm is dependent on: the state of the patient’s consciousness, the respiratory efficiency and postoperative complications caused by the occurrence of vasospasm. 2. The patients treated surgically in a classical way remained in the state of unconsciousness coexisting with respiratory failure on the first day after the surgery more often than the patients treated by embolisation. 3. A large group of patients treated both in the classical way and by embolisation remained in the 4th category of Patients’ Categorization Sheet for 10-12 days. 4. Independent of the treatment method used, the complications occurring most often were: headache, paresis, aphasia and mental disturbances.
