At any stage in the development of the cancer process, the patient may experience pain that should be treated as intensively as the underlying disease. For most patients, pain can be alleviated by using the recommended and commonly known and available painkillers. Opioid analgesics allow good control of moderate to severe pain. The range of drugs belonging to this group has significantly increased in the last few years, thanks to which it is possible to adjust the opioid individually for each patient, taking into account the patient’s general condition, the location, intensity, and nature of pain, as well as comorbidities and possible side effects. The article presents the management of pain in a patient with tonsil cancer, who, due to lack of treatment effectiveness and intolerance of side effects, used three strong opioids in succession, before satisfactory levels of analgesia and good tolerability of treatment with tapentadol were obtained.
