Assessment of nursing care in patients’ opinion

Aim: The aim of the study was an attempt to check what is a patient opinion about nursing care in University Hospital in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Material and methods: Study was conducted in University Hospital in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Anonymous questionnaire was propagated among patients from all wards the day before hospital leave or during the last day of hospital stay. Every patient who obtained a questionnaire stayed in hospital at least five days. Six hundred questionnaires were propagated and 289 (48,2%) were returned. “General” part of questionnaire included closed questions and one open question and among them 13 concerned attitudes and behavior of nursing personnel and nursing care. Second tool concerned wider assessment of nursing care quality. Arithmetic mean of score sums for individual questions was calculated. Level of significance p<0,05 was accepted as statistically significant test result.
Results: One hundred forty-five women and 142 men were included into the study. Age of patients was various and ranged between 16 to 60 years. The most numerous group were patients form 41 to 60 years. More than 78% of patients met kindness, goodness, understanding and politeness. Answers “did not meet” ranged from 60 to 65% in aspect of lack of culture, tact, disrespect and indifference. Hurry (as a negative feature) was in 63% indicated by patients. In comprehensive analysis a number of statistical dependences were obtained.
Conclusion: Assessment of nursing care in patients opinion is positive nevertheless nurses don’t pay enough attention to self-care preparation and educational aspect of activities.
