Introduction

The aim of the following thesis was to compare the scope of self-care and readiness for being discharged among patients who underwent surgical treatment for colorectal cancer.

Material and methods

The study included 100 people who underwent surgical treatment for colorectal cancer. The ADL Scale and the C-HOBIC Readiness to Discharge/Self-care Questionnaire were used to conduct the research.

Results

The research group was divided into 2 subgroups: patients with an open stoma and patients with intestinal anastomosis performed during the surgery. The study group was characterized by a high independence status when it comes to everyday life activities and high readiness for being discharged. The subgroups did not differ significantly in this matter (p > 0.05). The studies revealed differences in the evaluation of readiness for being discharged between the examined subgroups (p < 0.001). Patients without a stoma had a higher level of readiness for being discharged than those with a stoma (M = 50.72 vs M = 45.00) The results of correlation analyses indicated that the age of the patients was statistically significantly connected with the assessment of functional status and the assessment of readiness for being discharged in all patients (p < 0.001).

Conclusions

The majority of examined patients showed an independent attitude while performing basic life activities and high readiness for being discharged. People with a stoma have a lower discharge readiness than people without a stoma. With the increase of respondents’ age, the functionality of everyday life decreased and the readiness for being discharged was lower.
