Aim of the study: The aim of this work is to present the most common care problems of patients with diagnosed subarachnoid bleeding from a ruptured aneurysm of brain vessels.
Material and method: The research was carried out on a group of 44 patients who were treated in the Neurosurgical and Neurotraumatology ward in Dr J. Biziel City Hospital in Bydgoszcz in 2007. The research was carried out with a diagnostic survey method using a questionnaire which was specially prepared. In this questionnaire the following data were included: sociodemographic data, assessment by points according to Hunt & Hess scale after admittance to hospital, patients’ assessment according to the Patient Categorization Sheet on the day of their admittance and discharge from hospital, and assessment of treatment results using the Glasgow Outcome Scale on discharge day. Moreover, there were registered major symptoms of disease which appeared before and after surgery.
Results: Among treated patients the majority were women (60%). In 80% of patients after admittance to hospital and in 70% after discharge from hospital the care problem was headache.
Conclusions: 1. There is no relation between sex, age, the place of living and the used method of surgical treatment of brain aneurysm. 2. Both before and after surgery the most frequently observed care problem, in a majority of patients, was headache with various intensity, paresis and mental disorders. 3. Those patients who were surgically treated by embolization, achieved in scale assessment lower results, both on admittance and discharge from hospital, which means smaller deficit of self-care. 4. In order to assess patients suffering from subarachnoid bleeding, Hunt & Hess scale, Patient Categorization Sheet, Glasgow Outcome Scale and Karnofsky scale were used.
