Confronting perimenopausal women’s knowledge of coronary heart disease with their health behaviours. Controversial role of hormone replacement therapy in the protection of coronary heart disease

Introduction

The aim of the study is to present the Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule as an important clinical symptom, to discuss its characteristics, frequency of occurrence, primary locations of tumors metastasizing to the umbilicus, differential diagnosis and prognosis.

Material and methods

This is a review paper. Available scientific literature on the Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule, its pathogenesis, diagnostics, clinical significance and the role of the nurse in its diagnosis was analyzed.

Results

The Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule is a rare but clinically important symptom of metastasis to the umbilicus, often indicating an advanced neoplastic process in the abdominal or pelvic cavity. The prognosis in patients with the Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule is usually unfavorable, and the average survival time is short.

Conclusions

The Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule is an important alarm signal that should prompt a thorough oncological diagnostics.
