Introduction: The annual number of cardiac surgery operations in Poland increases significantly. It is a result of a faster and stressful pace of our lifestyle.

Aim of the study: To identify the influence of preferable health behaviours on the quality of life as an index to maintain optimal health.

Material and methods: The study group consisted of 89 patients before the cardiosurgical operation, staying at the cardiac surgery ward of the Clinic of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the 10th Military Clinical Hospital with the Polyclinic of Independent Public Health Care Establishment in Bydgoszcz. To conduct the research we used Juczyński’s inventory of health behaviours questionnaire (IZZ) and quality of life evaluation questionnaire (WHOQOL-Bref).

Results: Respondents differed between each other significantly as reagrds declared health behaviours and quality of life. It was found that the quality of life was dependent on health behaviours.

Conclusions : The results obtained may be helpful in the education of cardiac patients and their families. Thanks to pro-healthy behaviours, patients may consciously modify risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.
